A torque-converter stall test is one of the most useful power-train diagnostic tests on heavy equipment, but it is also commonly misinterpreted.

A stall RPM above specification does not automatically prove that the torque converter has failed. Likewise, a stall RPM below specification does not automatically prove that the engine has low power.

Stall speed represents a balance between engine power and the load absorbed by the torque converter, transmission, brakes, and drivetrain.
